Discharge printing is my favourite screen printing process to use and one that was the style of choice for Boyds of Bedford which meant I got a lot of practice in this technique. There’s a magical quality to the ink going on clear and then once heat is applied, the ink strips the colour out of the base fabric and leaves a natural cotton colour white/cream. As it works in quite a different way to all the other inks I use there has been a little learning curve and I thought I’d share some little insights that I’ve had during the time I’ve been printing..

When I took over Boyds Printworks I wanted the emphasis to be on creating eco-conscious, sustainably made prints without compromising on quality and finish. I don’t proclaim to be an expert but I have researched and present the minimum things I follow to be create more responsibly. It goes without saying that reducing water use is so important and so I also reuse and reduce water as much as possible. If folks are interested, there’s a lot more where these little ideas came from.

Great to be reusing a retained screen for a different purpose, I printed up some quality cotton canvas to create back patches, and a few smaller patches from the chest print design. Printed sustainably using water based discharge ink to bleach the design into the fabric.

So many questions when I’m mindlessly opening boxes and sorting order sizes. Help me! Are fingerless gloves socially acceptable now?

Nice tee and jacket project for the guys at K Ville Kustoms, their artwork had some great details for me to transfer onto the screens, I used a finer mesh screen than I’d usually use to make sure the pencil strokes came out well and I think it paid off.
The designs are discharge printed onto the garments using water based ink.

Somehow I didn’t manage to take a photo of the finished garments including jackets at all 🫠, but there’s more to be printed this week so we’re all good.

You may recognise the design as Iprinted tees last month and the customer asked me to retain the screen for a little while to get another use out of it

This is such a good idea for many reasons;
🔥 I get repeat business (🙌)
🔥 The customer doesn’t have to pay the cost of creating a screen again, which also is time consuming
🔥 The minimum order quantity for top ups can be under the new order MOQ
🔥 for retail, ideas can be tested out on the minimum quantity, and then a follow up order can be printed quickly to meet demand

So last time, we printed the design in pink and white colourways onto black @ascolour classic heavy cottons Tees,
this time the client has matched that quality by selecting some really nice @ascolour Sweaters in a range of colours, some I printed black, others in white, I highly recommend these.

Let me know when you place your order if you’d like me to retain the screen, there’s a small monthly storage fee but even if you paid us to store your screen for a year it would still beat the cost of remaking it from scratch, so could be beneficial for your plans.
