Mixing up a nice chalky muted blue that looks really similar to Kasbah Blue (if you’re into interiors, that’s a Graham & Brown colour). All mixed using @magnacolours Magnaprint.
Mixing colours to order saves so much wastage, and cost in having to buy in specific colours for perhaps a single use.

A little behind the scenes today to show you one of the processes involved in screenprinting; coating the screens to prep it for exposure later. Screenprinting seems like (and kinda is) a simple way of printing but there’s several bits of prep involved before we’re ready to get the design down onto a tshirt. All these little steps get us one step closer to printing a design.

Discharge printing is my favourite screen printing process to use and one that was the style of choice for Boyds of Bedford which meant I got a lot of practice in this technique. There’s a magical quality to the ink going on clear and then once heat is applied, the ink strips the colour out of the base fabric and leaves a natural cotton colour white/cream. As it works in quite a different way to all the other inks I use there has been a little learning curve and I thought I’d share some little insights that I’ve had during the time I’ve been printing..

When I took over Boyds Printworks I wanted the emphasis to be on creating eco-conscious, sustainably made prints without compromising on quality and finish. I don’t proclaim to be an expert but I have researched and present the minimum things I follow to be create more responsibly. It goes without saying that reducing water use is so important and so I also reuse and reduce water as much as possible. If folks are interested, there’s a lot more where these little ideas came from.

Great to be reusing a retained screen for a different purpose, I printed up some quality cotton canvas to create back patches, and a few smaller patches from the chest print design. Printed sustainably using water based discharge ink to bleach the design into the fabric.
